Munich Marienplatz Public Toilet Review
Marienplatz Toilet Location
This public toilet was easy to reach once I used St. Peter’s Church and the S-Bahn and U-Bahn entrances at Marienplatz as landmarks. From the main square, I walked toward St. Peter and then followed the signs down toward the underground station area. It is also convenient before heading toward Viktualienmarkt. The location is very central, but the entrance was not instantly obvious on my first visit, so it is better to look for the station entrance and toilet signs rather than expecting to see it clearly from the square.
Waiting Time and Crowds
When I visited, there were a few people ahead of me, but the wait was short. I waited around three minutes before I could use a stall. Recent reviews left by users on this site mention that all stalls were occupied at times, so it would be better not to wait until it becomes urgent. Around lunchtime, weekends, and busy tourist hours, this toilet may get crowded quickly.
Price and Payment
The toilet was not free. I paid 60 cents, and using coins made the process simple. There was an automatic payment entrance. However, recent user reviews on this site suggest that card payment or contactless payment may not always work properly. Because of that, I would recommend carrying coins before going there. If you only have a card or mobile payment, you may run into trouble depending on the machine condition that day.
Cleanliness and Interior Condition
When I used it, the toilet was cleaner than I expected for a public restroom in such a busy central location. The floor, stall, and sink area were usable, and I did not feel that the place was neglected. It was not a luxury restroom, but it was acceptable for a quick stop. That said, some recent reviews on this site mention dirtier conditions at certain times, so the actual cleanliness may depend on when you visit.

Smell and Comfort
There was no strong bad smell when I used it. Since it is an underground public toilet, there was a normal restroom odor, but it was not severe enough to make me leave. Some users recently wrote that there was no bad smell, while others mentioned unpleasant odor in the past. Based on that, the smell may change depending on the time of day and how recently the place was cleaned.
Door Lock and Facility Problems
The stall door I used locked properly, and the flush worked without a problem. I did not notice broken fixtures inside the stall. The entrance machine, however, is something to watch carefully. Some users on this site mentioned problems after paying, including situations where the gate or door did not work smoothly. After paying, it is better to enter right away and pay attention to the gate.
Handwashing Area and Supplies
The handwashing area worked properly during my visit. Water came out normally, and the sink area was reasonably clean. Still, I would carry tissues or hand sanitizer when using this restroom. Some reviews mention that soap or paper towels were not always available, so the supply situation may vary from visit to visit.
Staff and On-Site Experience
I did not have much direct interaction with the staff during my visit. However, the user reviews on this site are mixed. Some mention that the toilet was supervised and maintained, while others describe unfriendly staff behavior. If there is a payment or entry issue, it is probably best to check the machine instructions first and stay calm when asking for help.
Satisfaction and Would I Use It Again
Overall, this toilet was useful for a quick stop in the middle of Munich. The 60-cent fee was not ideal, but considering the location and the cleanliness during my visit, it was acceptable. I would use it again if I were near Marienplatz and had coins ready. Current on-site conditions may differ. This review is mainly based on my own visit, while recent possible changes were referenced from user reviews left on this site.
