Rathausstraße 5 Berlin Public Toilet Review
Location Overview
I used the public toilet at Rathausstraße 5, 10178 Berlin. The location is very central, so it is convenient when walking around Berlin-Mitte or spending time near the city center. For a quick toilet stop, the location itself is one of the main advantages.
Waiting Time
There was almost no waiting time when I visited. I did not have to stand in a long line, but entry was not completely automatic either. Because the payment is handled in cash and there is staff involved, it took about one to two minutes before I could use the toilet.
Cost and Payment
The toilet costs 50 cents to use. The sign clearly says cash only and no card payment. This is important because you may be refused entry if you do not have coins with you. Card payment and mobile payment were not available, so carrying a 50-cent coin is strongly recommended.

Cleanliness
The toilet was quite clean during my visit. Compared with many public toilets in Berlin, this one felt better maintained. The floor, toilet area, and general condition were acceptable and even better than expected. However, the condition may vary depending on the time of day, and there have been complaints about missing toilet paper or dirt at certain times.
Smell
The smell was manageable. It still had the usual public toilet atmosphere, but it was not overwhelmingly bad. I did not notice a strong unpleasant odor, which made the visit much more comfortable than in many other public restrooms.
Door Lock and Malfunctions
The door worked properly when I used it. It closed as expected, and I did not experience any issue with the lock or sudden opening. I did not notice any technical malfunction. The main issue is not the door, but the access rule: no cash can mean no entry.
Handwashing Area
The handwashing area was usable and looked reasonably maintained. The sign mentions paper, soap, and disinfectant being provided. During my visit, the sink area was fine, but I would still recommend carrying tissues or hand sanitizer just in case supplies run out.
Staff Experience
The staff experience may depend on the situation. Some people describe the staff as very friendly, while others felt the tone was strict or unfriendly. My interaction was short and direct. The cash-only rule was clearly enforced, which can be stressful if you urgently need the toilet and only have a card.
Satisfaction and Reuse
Overall, I was satisfied with this toilet. The 50-cent fee is not too high considering the central location and the cleanliness. The biggest downside is that only cash is accepted. If I am nearby again and have coins with me, I would use this toilet again.
